CALL TO ACTION: YOUTH MARCH AND SIT-IN AT ARIZONA STATE CAPITOL!

Dear friends and fellow activists,

Our calls for civility and respect in Arizona have been met with extreme hostility and ignorance! Rhetoric in our state has reached new extremes of hate, harassment and blame for migrant families and youth. Recent proposals by various members of the Arizona Legislature (including SB1405, SB 1308 and 1309, and SB 1611) are an assault on our education, healthcare, families, human dignity, and Constitutional freedoms. Assaults on these institutions, even in the harshest political and economic climates, are morally wrong and unacceptable.

The Repeal Coalition is calling upon the youth of Arizona to stand up to these hateful laws. We invite you to bring the young people of your communities to our Youth March and Sit-In at the Arizona State Capitol on Wednesday, March 16, 2011, at 1:00 p.m.

We want the Arizona State Legislature to see face-to-face whose future they are damaging with these hateful laws. Therefore, we will gather at Wesley Bolin Plaza at 1700 W. Washington St. at 12:30 on Wednesday, March 16. There will be snacks and drinks available. At 1:00, youth of all ages will lead a short march to the Senate Lawn at the Arizona State Legislature, just a block away. There, we will all sit down, sing songs, and listen to speeches by the young people of our state.

In order to remind the legislature and the people of Arizona who is most affected by this hatred, the march will be led by children. Chaperones will accompany any children who may need it.

Please mobilize the youth in your communities to attend this important event! Ask them to dress up in a costume of what they would like to do when they grow up (doctor, firefighter, teacher, construction worker, etc.) to show the Legislature that their laws will destroy Arizona's future. Also, ask these youth if they would like to speak to the audience at the sit-in in order to voice the concerns of young people everywhere who are affected by these hateful laws!

Dozens of youth from communities in Flagstaff and Phoenix have already signed up and are organizing within their schools. We have attached the documents we have been using to mobilize youth, so feel free to use them if you would like. We have also attached a general sign-up form in case you would like to use this as well.

If you have any questions or comments concerning this event, or if you or your group would like to speak, please contact Cassandra Belson at 480-234-0470 or Cassandra.belson@gmail.com.

In Peace and Solidarity,
The Repeal Coalition
